31 Years and Counting
Drive a Senior North Central started its program in 1989 and was developed on the model of West Austin caregivers and Northwest Austin caregivers.
The original name was North Central Caregivers and it was supported by 16 congregations in that area. It was managed by a board of directors who were representatives from several of the churches. The purpose was to respond to the needs of the increasing number of seniors who were living alone and who could no longer drive.
In the early 2000’s we joined a collaborative of most of the area caregiver organizations in an effort to develop a common marketing strategy and to encourage best practices and common operational tools. As a result of work by the collaborative all of the area caregiver groups adopted the use of a software program called Assisted Rides. That program allowed a much more streamlined process of recording clients and volunteers and resulted in a more efficient coordination of services for the seniors with the volunteers.
As North Central Caregivers evolved it changed its name to Drive a Senior North Central to align with other caregiver groups and to more closely reflect its primary service. In 2020 Drive a Senior North Central merged with Drive a Senior West Austin to form Drive a Senior ATX (DAS ATX). The two agencies had functioned separately for over 30 years with very similar cultures and philosophies. As senior transportation needs are rapidly growing it is felt that one large organization can do a better job at expanding our services to meet the needs of all Austin aging adults. We will be stronger together and are excited about what is to come!
